The Harper family first heard the ghost at 2:11 every morning: three footsteps, a sigh and the television turning on by itself. They assumed unfinished business. They were right. The unfinished business costs $17.99 a month.
THE PASSWORD DIED WITH HIM
The apparition appears to be former homeowner Leonard Pike, who died in 2019 and, according to billing emails still arriving at the address, never canceled a premium streaming account. His descendants changed the email password. Leonard has responded by haunting the living room.
A VERY MODERN HAUNTING
There are no chains, bloodstains or messages written on mirrors. Leonard changes profiles, opens Account Settings and repeatedly gets trapped at a two-factor authentication screen. When the family unplugged the television, every cabinet door opened at once. They plugged it back in.
We’re not scared of him. We’re scared he’s going to upgrade the plan.— — Marissa Harper
CUSTOMER SUPPORT
The family contacted the streaming company and explained that the account holder was deceased but still technically using the service. The representative requested verification. A cold spot formed beside the router during the call.
The Harpers now leave the remote on the coffee table each night. Leonard’s activity has decreased since they added him as an authorized user. The subscription remains active. So, apparently, does Leonard.
